Detroit Food Commons is a partnership between the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN) and Develop Detroit, and it involves the construction of a new two-story, 31,000-square-foot building located in Detroit’s North End neighborhood.
The first floor of the newly constructed building features the Detroit People’s Food Co-op, a community owned grocery store selling healthy, locally sourced food, and a 50-seat café. The second floor of the building contains a fully licensed kitchen for incubating food enterprises, a community event and banquet space, and offices for DBCFSN.
The 15,000-square-foot, ground-floor grocery store provides healthy, affordable options to approximately 32,000 low-income community residents and 20,000 food desert residents within a 1.5-mile trade area. Prior to being built, the co-op signed up about 1,300 member-owners, underscoring the pent-up demand for high-quality grocers in the neighborhood. Around 80% of the store products are natural and organic and 20% are considered “clean conventional.”
Products are selected based on the locality of production, price, expected demand and availability. The co-op sources vegetables and leafy greens from DBCFSN’s urban farm and offers on-site nutrition and cooking classes to teach customers about healthy eating. The development of the space has created 41 full-time jobs.
Detroit Black Community Food Security Network is a 501(c)3 non-profit and was founded to ensure that Detroit's predominately African American population is leading and participating in the food movement – connecting black Detroiters to healthy food and business opportunities, and amplifying their voices in revitalizing the city. Develop Detroit is a mission-based real estate development firm, established in 2014. They combine a social mission and private enterprise into an organization focused on real estate development that meets real needs.
Michigan Community Capital and other mission-driven partners provided New Markets Tax Credits to the Detroit People’s Food Co-Op in 2022 and the total capital investment was $22M.
